Institution
Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, Japan, is a private university offering courses in foreign languages, culture and international communication.

Students
KUIS students are very motivated learners, although typically for Japan they arrive in their first year with advanced grammatical awareness, but limited proficiency in language production or listening skills. Undergraduate courses are of four years duration.  English is a required subject for most students, even those not majoring in English, and the aim of the English Language Institute is that students will graduate as proficient communicators in the language.
Purpose
The SALC operates alongside the English Language Institute, catering not just for English learners, but for all languages taught in the university.

Features The SALC employs a large team of learning advisers and materials writers.  Students can register for optional courses which help them to become independent learners.

Facilities and materials
The SALC has many features specifically for language learning purposes, such as sound-proofed rooms and booths, a "study buddy" noticeboard. There is plenty of space to house the ever-increasing collection of books, worksheets, DVDs, videos, and software, which currently number over 10,000.
