The Language Self-Access Centre (LSAC) at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, New Zealand

South Island's largest educational institution (30,000 students)

Students

Over 1,600 International students from more than 50 different countries. Approximately 1000 students in the School of English and Education over the year and the rest in mainstream classes. The LSAC provides suitable resources for a range of different student needs; international students typically want to return to their home countries with a useful English language qualification and the permanent residents are settling in to the New Zealand society.

Purpose

The main purpose is to encourage autonomous language learning. The LSAC provides language support to students and staff for whom English is an additional language.

Features

Facilitated learning opportunities, drop-in times, language lab and computer suite dedicated for language learning. All English language classes are scheduled for 1 hour per week in the LSAC.

Facilities and materials

CD ROMs, DVDs and audio CDs, language computer programs, newspapers, radio & TV news course books, worksheets, listening packs, readers, dictionaries, NZ English materials and information about life in NZ, English for Specific Purposes, English for Academic Study, IELTS and Cambridge examinations. The LSAC also offers some resources for other languages than English.
