Learner Autonomy and Current Trends in Language Teaching and Learning
The LASIG PCE in
Harrogate 2010, Learner Autonomy and Current Trends in Language Teaching and Learning, focuses on two ‘trends’ that have received
increasing attention worldwide over the last few years, as technology becomes
ever more pervasive, and as languages (especially English) are increasingly
learned outside the confines of the foreign language classroom:
- Technology
Enhanced Language Learning (TELL)
- Content and
Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
To discuss the
relationship between learner autonomy and these two major trends we have once
again been able to draw up a full and diverse programme, involving learner
autonomy practitioners and researchers from around the world in a range of
different types of presentations (talks, workshops, poster presentations).
Our programme includes:
- Four invited speakers (Do Coyle,
- Speakers from nine countries, spread between
- Poster presentations integrated into the day, so that
a high level of interaction with and around them is generated.
- A focus on learning at primary, secondary, and
tertiary levels.
Although we have 12
presentations in all, we have managed to build in around them a large amount of
time for reflection and group discussion. From our experience, it is these
spaces that really make the difference, and will enable participants to
establish individual connections between the topics dealt with and their
own practice.
We believe that the above
described ingredients will make the LASIG PCE a valuable and enriching
experience for participants. The only missing ingredient vitally important to a
